Motorcyclists roll into town to show off rides and tattoos

Winner of the best female tattoo, Tart Horstmann shows off the winning piece Saturday at Bikes by the Bay on the Eureka Waterfront. Joni Schrantz/The Eureka Reporter
Davey O’Brien asks Dewey Alexy about the details on the bike he built at Bikes by the Bay on the Eureka Waterfront, Saturday. Joni Schrantz/The Eureka Reporter

It’s not every day that one sees a person with kidneys tattooed on their back, and 20-year-old Sami Geiser of Eureka wanted people to know it.

Geiser got the tattoo four months ago in support of a friend going to medical school and was awarded “most unusual tattoo” during the tattoo contest at the eighth annual Bikes by the Bay on Saturday.

The roar of motorcycles filled Halvorsen Park as the smell of fresh chili dogs wafted through the air.

More than 1,300 bikers and their friends attended the Show and Shine fundraiser event benefiting North Coast Big Brothers Big Sisters.Besides getting unusual tattoos, Geiser said in her spare time she rides the Buell Blast motorcycle she got two years ago.

“It was my mom’s old bike and I said, ‘I’ll take it!’” Geiser said.

In addition to the tattoo award that Geiser won, other tattoo categories included best overall male and female, best black and white, best color and most realistic.

Bikers could enter their motorcycles into 19 judging categories, including American bikes, European bikes, choppers, best paint, people’s choice and participants’ choice.Barry Smith, director of Bikes by the Bay, said he has been riding motorcycles since he was a teenager and owns a Harley-Davidson Lowrider.

“It’s my favorite way to travel; you’re using all of your senses,” Smith said. “Every time you stop for fuel, people want to know where you’ve been.

”Smith is also a member of the California North Coast Harley Owner Group.

He said that for the most part, there aren’t hard feelings between owners of Harley-Davidson bikes and other brands of bikes.

“If you ride, it doesn’t matter what you ride,” Smith said. “We all give each other a hard time.

”Members of United Bikers of California and Bikers Against Child Abuse were also present at the event.

Wayne Palmer of McKinleyville showed crowds at the event motorized bicycles he had built.

“It is a glorified hobby out of my garage,” Palmer said. “They’re a conversation piece.

”Palmer said he has been building engines onto bicycles for five years. He was also selling manufactured motorized bicycles called whizzers.

“They’re a moped with pedals,” he said. “You can still ride it as a bicycle.

”Tomorrow will conclude Bikes by the Bay events and will include a poker run departing from Redwood Harley-Davidson in Eureka at noon. Registration for the poker run will begin at 11 a.m. and the ride will end at Hawg Wild in Orick.

Smith said his favorite part of riding is the freedom of the open road.

“It’s just you, your bike and the pavement,” he said.

Flowers tattoo are for the most part a development of the past few decades, and testimony to the fact that it is now acceptable for a woman to get tattoos ( it wasn't always like this). A floral tattoo is often a good first tattoo for a woman who outgrew the age of the fake tattoo and wants something fairly subtle.

Flower tattoos can be pretty and rather feminine looking, but all the same there is considerable variety with regard to the style and overall look of the tattoo. They can be small and delicate or they can be big, bold, colorful and eclectic. You can have just a single flower or a chain of flowers.

But Flower tattoos are more than a pretty image on a pretty girl. Flowers are full of age-old symbolism (see further).

Flower tattoo designs are also popular amongst men, but then they are usually incorporated in atribal design, or combined with a skull, cross or dagger. Hawaiian flowers are appropriate for a man’s tattoo as well.

Flowers in tattoo art are combined frequently with vines, butterflies, hummingbirds and ladybugs.

The rose must be the oldest and most popular flower used for tattoo designs. Roses mean very different things for different people, but there are some traditional meanings:

Red roses stand for love and romance (as well as courage).
Pink roses mean grace and admiration.
White rose tattoos stand symbol for eternal love and innocence.
Rosebuds denote beauty and youth.
Many old school tattoos incorporate a rose image, and even on their own rose tattoos can have some of that old school look.

A cherry blossom tattoo is a very feminine tattoo. The cherry blossom is a symbol for female beauty and love (in China), but also for the transience of life (in Japan) because the cherry blossom blooms for a very short time only.
This flower is often seen in Japanese tattoo art.

A lily as a flower in general denotes purity, but there are many different kinds of lilies and lily tattoo designs. Depending on the culture and times, lilies often mean different or even opposite things.
In ancient Egypt, the lily was a symbol for fertility, while in medieval times it symbolized innocence.
The calla lily signifies beauty, but an orange lily on the other hand denotes hatred.
The meaning behind a tiger lily tattoo is usually pride or prosperity.
Lotus flower tattoos are amongst my favorite tattoo designs because of their symbolic meaning.
Just like the beautiful lotus flower floats on the muddy waters of a pond, it is a symbol for purity floating on the dirty waters of our society.
The lotus flower is seen often in Indian and Chinese mythology, where it is a symbol for spiritual awakening.
Just like cherry blossom, the lotus flower is seen often in Japanese tattoo designs.
Sunflower tattoo designs can be particularly striking. Just as the sunflower itself is bolder and more impact than most other flowers (due to its size and color), a sunflower tattoo is generally bigger and bolder than most other flower tattoos.
A big sunflower is a symbol for loyalty.
A smaller sunflower means adoration.
The Hibiscus is also a popular tattoo flower. It is a tropical flower (the state flower of Hawaii) and is usually red or yellow.
The symbolic meaning of an Hibiscus tattoo is delicate beauty or consumed by love.
Daisy tattoos, on the ankle, shoulder or foot for example, are pretty and delicate. They are very much in keeping with a feminine, ladylike appearance (Daisy is also a common girl's name) and are usually small.
The Daisy is a flower that represents innocence, loyalty in love, purity and faith.

Tropical flower tattoos are often combined with a Hawaiian band and are appropriate for both men and women. Hawaiian arm and leg tattoos were very popular for a long time, and are making a bit of a comeback currently. A tropical flower may be seen on its own, but more often it is part of an integrated design or pattern.
Other flowers that are often used for tattoos are forget me not's (an old believe is that the wearers of this flower are not forgotten by their lovers), orchid flowers (mysterious), sweet pea flowers (blissful pleasure), irises (passion), violets (faithfulness, modesty), narcissus (self-esteem) and peony flowers (anger).
Flower tattoos are an attractive option for women who want a discreet and feminine tattoo, but they are more than that. Flower tattoos can convey a variety of looks, images and styles, from old school to tribal. They are timeless and very attractive, and because they can be quite small, they can work in a variety of places and designs.

Does it hurt

Does it hurt

Does it hurt? Pain is a relative term and of course, it depends on your threshold of pain. Most people believe the best thing about laser tattoo removal is how much ‘less pain’ there is when compared to other tattoo removal procedures. “Some people describe the sensation of the laser as being akin to a mosquito bite, or a rubber band being snapped against the skin.”

How long does it take? Depending on the size and how complex the tattoo you choose will determine how long it takes. Black tattoos with simple outlining and shading is said to be a lot easier to do than full back colored tattoo. It can take from a couple weeks to a couple of months because the body needs three weeks to heal between laser tattoo removal sessions—and some lasers are designs for specific colors only.

Why choose Laser Tattoo Removal? It is virtually painless when comparing to other tattoo removal procedures and it is free of infection risk, and is known to have great results. There are other methods, like excision which actually remove the tattooed skin with a scalpel and this can often make the tattooed area look worse than it did before. Another technique like dermabrasion actually ‘sands down’ the tattooed area of the skin, making laser tattoo removal a popular and comfortable choice when it comes to tattoo removal.

Tattoo Tidbit: Even after your tattoo is healed, tattoos are more susceptible to the sun’s rays, so protect it from direct sunlight. Always wear a sunscreen SPF 30 on the tattoo. This protects your skin and keeps the tattoo from facing.

Tattoo Tidbit: The color additives used in tattooing pigments are the same as those used in cosmetics. They are monitored by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and approved for topical application only. There are more than 100 different colors

Can you remove your tattoo

Can you remove your tattoo
Most people will keep their tattoos forever but sometimes people decide they would prefer to have their tattoo removed. In the past, surgery was required but today a medical procedure using a laser can remove your tattoo and some of the tattoo shops have this service. Check with the American Dermatological Association to find a reputable laser removal specialist.

Tattoo Removal Creams

The difficulty inherent in removing tattoos is related to tattooing technique. When you get a tattoo, the ink is deposited in the dermis, the lower layer of skin. That’s why it can’t be rubbed off, and why the ink-laden skin is not shed and renewed. In case of tattoo removal that deep layer of skin needs to be accessed. This is why you shouldn’t trust the so-called tattoo removal cream that sometimes comes on the market – tattoo removal creams are very unlikely to be effective.

Chemical Peel
Other, more ‘drastic’ tattoo removal methods do work. One proven method is tattoo removal by chemical peel, which progressively removes layers of skin and, eventually, the tattoo design. Sometimes acid is used in that process – this is known as trichloroacetic acid tattoo removal. A process call microdermabrasion, which essentially ‘sands’ the skin, is also used to remove tattoos. In the past small tattoos were sometimes removed surgically. The problem with all of these methods is that they tend to cause scarring. For people really determined to get rid of a tattoo, this might be acceptable – but for many, it was a catch-22. If the object is unblemished skin, a scar really isn’t any better than a tattoo.

What is Laser Removal

What is Laser Removal
Laser tattoo removal is the process of breaking the ink molecules into smaller pieces and allowing them to be absorbed into the bloodstream and disappear.
Laser Tattoo Removal
Luckily, some new methods for tattoo removal were developed in the late 1980s, and have been used with increasing success ever since. One of these is infrared coagulation tattoo removal, and the other – the most popular modern method, in fact – is laser tattoo removal. This highly effective and relatively painless method is very successful, and doesn’t leave a scar. It is expensive, though – while getting a tattoo generally cost $110 - $220, depending on the intricacy of the tattoo, removal of that same tattoo might cost you up to ten times that amount

Caring for a New Tattoo

Caring for a New Tattoo

Your tattoo artist will probably give you a pamphlet that explains all the necessary procedures along with instructions such as:

- You should remove the bandage one to two hours after completion.

- Wash gently with cool or lukewarm water, using a mild antibacterial soap.

- Always pat dry. (Don't rub!)

- Apply very thin coats of antibacterial ointment and work into the skin. You will find that too much ointment can pull color out of the tattoo.

- Do not soak the tattoo in water or letting the shower pound directly on it.

- Avoiding the sun, sea and swimming pool until healed is advised.

- Do not pick at your scabs. They will fall off as the tattoo heals, approximately in one to three weeks.

- Ice packs should be used if swelling or redness occurs.

- Always call a doctor if you have even the slightest signs of infection.

The tattoo itself involves several steps

The tattoo itself involves several steps

Here is one way it works; begin by outlining: By using a single-tipped needle and a thin ink, the artist creates a permanent line over the stencil. They usually start at the bottom of the right side and work up (lefties generally start on the left side) so they don't smear the stencil when cleaning excess ink from the permanent line.

- Shading: Once the area is cleaned with soap and water, the artist uses a thicker ink and a variety of needles to create an even, solid line. Be careful here because Improper technique during this step can cause shadowed lines, excessive pain and delayed healing.

- Color: The artist then cleans the tattoo and overlaps each line of color to ensure solid, even hues.

- There is a final cleaning and bandaging: After using a disposable towel to remove any blood and plasma, a sterile bandage is used to cover the tattoo. You will find that some bleeding occurs during tattooing, but most stop within a few minutes. The tattoo artist then fills in a tattoo using a thicker needle.

Tribal Tattoos
Tribal tattoos have been in vogue for quite a while now (since the early 1990s) and it’s easy to see why, they just look good.

Advantages of getting a tribal tattoo:

1.There's a lot of black ink in tribal tattoos, which has the advantage that it holds up very well, black tattoo ink doesn't fade as fast as other colors.

2.Tribal tattoo designs are very popular, so as long as you don't want a specific or traditional tribal, you shouldn't have a hard time finding a good tattoo artist that can design your custom tattoo.

3.It's easier to design your own tattoo or at least a mockup of your own tribal than it is with other tattoo designs. Tribal tattoos have a bold visual appeal: their thick, black curving lines and interlocking patterns lend themselves well to many of the standard tattoo locations, such as the upper arm (in the form of a tribal armband for example) , the back or the lower back.

Disadvantages of tribal tattoos:

Tribal

- Tattoo removal is not working very good on those large patches of black ink.
- Covering them up with another tattoo ain't working either.

- Finding a tattoo artist or tattoo parlor is not easy when you want a traditional design of a specific tribe.

- When you're getting a tattoo that is an imitation of a traditional tribal design, keep in mind that you might be insulting the original tribe members. This is especially the case with Ta Moko, which is a form of family and personal identification of the Maori people. Copying their designs is a form a identity theft.

What are tattoos used for in tribal communities?

- Identification: each tribe and family has its own tattoo motifs. Tribal tattoos read like a book: they tell a lot about the origin and the social hierarchy of the person who wears them. Tribe members can identify each other by their tattoos, in this life and in the afterlife.

- Social status: the style and size of a tribal tattoo says a lot about a person's social status in the group. A person with a big tattoo usually has a higher rank in the society compared to one with a simple tattoo.

- Rite of passage: getting a tattoo is part of the ritual that turns a boy into a man, a girl into a woman.

- Magic, healing and protection: tribal tattoos are believed to have magical powers. In some tribes the boy gets assigned a totem animal during his rights of passage. By tattooing that animal it is believed that the wearer inherits some of the powers of his totem animal.

Modern tribal tattoos are generally speaking not strongly associated with any particular tribe and are usually stripped of their social meaning. Tribals we see in the Western world today are often based on:
- Polynesian tattoo designs

- The tattoo designs of the tribes of Borneo, namely the Iban (Sarawak) and the Kayan and Kenyah (Kalimantan)

Tribal

Tattoo artists like Leo Zulueta, an American with Filipino roots, and Alex Binnie, from London, had a great influence on the development of this modern tribal tattoo style.

Luckily for today's tribal tattoo lovers, the methods used to apply the tattoos have changed. Bone needles and plant or animal dyes have been replaced by tattoo machines and the circumstances in which a tattoo artist today works are generally more hygienic than those of a tribal community. Some people though, want to go all the way and prefer to be tattooed using the traditional methods.

Traditional Tribal Tattoo Art

Here's an overview of tribes where tattoos played and play an important role in society:

Borneo Tattoos

Tattooing in Borneo (one of islands of Indonesia/Malaysia) is an important form of body modification. The tattoos are believed to protect against pain and diseases. The Iban, Kayan en Kenyah tribes, all headhunters, share the same style of tattoos. The Kayan used carved wood blocks or carved skulls to transfer the designs onto the skin.

Hawaiian Tribal Tattoos
Like the other tribal tattoos, tattoos in Hawaii have a hidden meaning and are believed to have magical power. They are applied during a ritual ceremony. Both men and women are tattooed with motifs like triangles, squares, crescents and animals like sharks and lizards.

Aztec Tribal Tattoos
The Aztecs were another group of Native Americans. They lived in central America from the 13th to the 16th century and used tattoos to mark a warrior's rank and differentiate between the various tribes. Typical Aztec tattoos include gods like Quetzalcoatl and Huitilopochtili, suns and eagles.

The Haidas are the indigenous people of the territory that lies on the west coast of North America (southeast Alaska). The people of the haida tribe decorate their objects with crests (totems) and use tattoos to represent the family crest and social status. The crests included all kinds of animals (killer whale, shark, wolf, eagle, owl) as well as the sun, the moon, clay,

Tribal Tattoo Designs

To a certain extent, tribal tattoos speak for themselves. It is a special feature of a tribal tattoo that even a relatively simple or unformed line or curve tends to look good, even just on its own.

In recent years, a style that we can call the New Tribal has emerged. Symbols that have nothing to do with the original tribal designs are combined with the typical lines, curves and interlocking formations of the traditional tribal tattoos. In the case of New Tribals, it is the decoration surrounding the central element that marks them as tribal. Here's an overview of tribal tattoo symbols or symbols that are often combined with tribal designs:

Tribal Dragon Tattoos

The dragon is a mythological creature that appears in many different cultures around the world and has as many different symbolic meanings.
In Asia, dragons are seen as a benevolent creature. The Japanese dragon denotes the male principle (yang): the sun, air, fertility, rain. It symbolizes the dominance of the heavenly over the earthly powers.
In the West the dragon is portrayed as an evil creature, breathing fire to show its mythical power.

Tribal Cross Tattoos
The cross is a very old symbol and appears in many religions around the world. A cross is a good symbol to express one's spirituality or religion and it lends itself well to a tribal adaptation

Tribal Rose Tattoos
The rose and flowers in general are popular tattoo designs. Roses can mean a lot of different things, it's a symbol for love, respect, spiritual growth (just like the lotus flower), Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary.

Tribal Tiger Tattoos
The tiger is a very powerful symbol and appears often in Asian tattoo genres. It is a symbol for power, beauty and cruelty.

Tribal Bear Tattoos
The tribal bear tattoo (sometimes depicting a whole bear, but often just a paw print) is reminiscent of some Native American tattoos. It gives the impression of an animal totem or protective animal spirit.

Feminine Tribal Tattoos 1

Generally speaking, tribal tattoos have a masculine energy about them, given their bold, thick lines. At the same time, they are versatile and they tend to look very good on women as well. Maybe it’s the appeal of the contrast.

Over the past few years though, some tribal tattoo designs have evolved that are characteristically feminine in nature. They have the same recognizable tribal patterns, but they tend to be smaller and more self contained. A good example might be the tribal butterfly tattoo, a popular choice for an ankle or shoulder tattoo. A larger version of the tribal butterfly can also look good on the lower back. Tribal rose tattoos are also popular in many of the same locations.

What Are the Risks

What Are the Risks?

Chances are everything will be just fine. Be sure that the tattoo artist uses all sterilized equipment and tools. Keep in mind that if you don't go to a tattoo studio or the tattoo studio doesn't follow precautions like using sterilized equipment or if the tattoo artist shares ink between customers, you're putting yourself at risk for getting viral infections such as hepatitis, bacterial skin infections, or dermatitis (severe skin irritation).

Some people may have allergic reactions to the tattoo ink so know your body and if you already have a skin condition such as eczema, you may have flare-ups as a result of the tattoo.

You may have serious complications if you attempt to do a tattoo yourself, have a friend do it for you, or have it done in any unclean environment. Because tattooing involves injections under the skin, viruses such as HIV and hepatitis B and C can be transferred into your body if proper precautions aren’t taken. At times, the American Red Cross and some other blood banks require people to wait 12 months after getting a tattoo before they can donate blood.

I am an artist, I paint and sculpt women primarily; in their daily lives; in lives they might be afraid of; and in lives they wish they had. My goal has always remained the same; to hear them breathing and to know the passion I feel in my soul is met by theirs.
It is not possible to feel apathetic while standing next to passion. I don't paint landscapes to hang above someone's couch, paintings meant to be a resting place for the mind? I want to paint feelings that one cannot dismiss. I hope to stir up feelings that overwhelm within the viewer as well as myself. It is not my goal to feel nothing but a sunny day or peacefulness, shiny trinkets that rest on walls that can be walked away from. I want to paint women who feel something. I paint myself as I define it and revel in the fact that I am made whole by my own journey of introspection.

I want to paint strength, sexuality, pain, power, a force of intensity, emotional qualities that generate a reaction. I don't want to paint the sky, I want to paint the dominance of the wind that caused it to be felt on ones skin, in the form of a woman. I pick up my brush or clay between my fingers and consider a certain belligerence, an attitude of confidence that meets the power I need to form an energy outside myself and I welcome it in. I paint or sculpt until I hear them breathing and their breath becomes my own.

In every single one of my paintings my objective is to 'know them' . To let each one reveal their own vision or message. I am often astounded as their presence unfolds & I am met with who they are. I then realize that who 'they' are, defines me as well. My hope is that my paintings & sculptures relate to you, their audience & that they give you the message you need for your own heart and soul.

How to Take Care of a Tattoo

How to Take Care of a Tattoo

This is a very important step - take care of your tattoo until it fully heals. Instructions that the studio gives you should be followed when caring for your tattoo so that you heal properly. If you see or feel any signs of infection such as pain, spreading redness, swelling, or drainage of pus, call your doctor.

- It is advisable to keep a bandage on the area for up to 24 hours.

- The tattoo artist will probably advise you to avoid touching the tattoo and not to pick at any scabs that form.

- You will be advised to wash the tattoo with an antibacterial soap (don't use alcohol or peroxide =they'll dry out the tattoo). Using a soft towel to dry the tattoo — just pat it dry and don’t rub.

- Antibiotic ointment may be advised on the tattoo. It is recommended not to use petroleum jelly!

- If you have redness or swelling try an ice pack on the area.

- Keep the tattoo dry until it heals, staying away from pools, hot tubs, or long, hot baths would be best.

- Your tattoo should be kept out of the sun until it's fully healed.

Church Ablaze As Cartoon Protests Continue Across Globe
Pakistani protesters enraged by caricatures of the prophet Muhammad set fire to a church in Sindh province yesterday as police battled with rioters in the federal capital, Islamabad.
About 400 people attacked the church in southern Sukkar city after accusations that a local Christian had burned pages from the Qur’an, local police said.
The outrage sparked by the cartoons showed no signs of dying down, with further protests in Jakarta and Istanbul.

As in previous cartoon protests, many seemed as angry with their leader, General Pervez Musharraf, and his alliance with the American president, George Bush, who is due to visit Pakistan next month, as they were with the caricatures.
Rashid Hafiz, 22, handed out salt to protesters whose mouths were stinging from the tear gas. "The US and its allies are the terrorists of this world. Inshallah, we will crush them," he said. Abu Omar, a 41-year-old civil servant from Rawalpindi, had brought his five sons to the march, one as young as eight. The only way to end the riots, he said, was for the Danish government to hand over the cartoonist to "the Muslim community".

In Jakarta, hundreds of stick-wielding Muslim radicals attacked the heavily fortified American embassy, angry over the Muhammad cartoons, a statue depicting the prophet in the US Supreme Court and their perception that Washington wants to destroy Islam.
The 400 members of the Islamic Defenders Front arrived at the mission behind a banner reading: "We are ready to attack the enemies of the prophet." After shouting slogans and burning an American flag and a photo of President Bush, the protesters started throwing stones, rotten eggs and sticks at the perimeter gates. They then charged the gates, catching the 50 police officers off guard.

The windows of a guardpost were smashed but little other damage was done. The embassy claimed the incident was "premeditated" and "staged for television". It said: "This sort of thuggery is unacceptable and needs to be treated as what it is."
Protests in Indonesia against the cartoons have been occurring daily but were largely peaceful because most religious leaders preached moderation.

What's the Procedure Like

What's the Procedure Like?

Here's what you might expect from a normal tattooing procedure:

- The tattoo artist will wash his or her hands with a germicidal soap.

- The to-be-tattooed area on your body should be cleaned and disinfected.

- The tattoo artist should put on clean, fresh gloves (and possibly a surgical mask).

- The tattoo artist should then explain the sterilization procedure to you and open up the single-use, sterilized equipment (such as needles, etc.).

- If the tattoo artist is using the tattoo machine (with a sterile, single-use needle attached), the tattoo artist will begin drawing an outline of the tattoo.

- The outline will be cleaned with antiseptic soap and water.

- Sterile, thicker needles are usually installed on the tattoo machine, and the tattoo artist will start shading the design. Once the tattoo artist has cleaned the area again, color will be injected.

- A disposable cloth will be used to remove any blood.

- Once the new tattoo is finished, the area will be cleaned once again and a bandage will be applied.

Does It Hurt to Get a Tattoo

Does It Hurt to Get a Tattoo?

This depends on your pain threshold and the expertise of the person wielding the tattoo machine. Where you get the tattoo is also a factor in pain. Getting a tattoo involves being stuck multiple times with a needle, therefore, it can feel like getting a bunch of shots or being stung by a hornet multiple times. It is also normal to bleed a little.

This is my first tattoo What should I expect

This is my first tattoo – What should I expect?

This can be a very exciting experience so being prepared on what to expect can make your experience safe and fun! Be sure to be well rested and well fed before a tattoo application. If you are tired, or your blood sugar is low, you could experience a higher level of discomfort than you normally would. It is best not to drink alcohol before getting tattooed because not only do you become dehydrated, it will also cause you to bleed more which can have a negative effect on your new tattoo.

What to look for in a tattoo studio

What to look for in a tattoo studio

To find a good studio you should do some research on your own and talk to people you know and get references. It is commonly said that a good studio should be equipped with an autoclave which is a device that pressurizes the instruments and kills any viruses or bacteria. It is recommended that a good studio should have germicidal soap, needle buckets, proper disposal containers, packaged gauze with sterility intact, disposable gloves and check to be sure the studio is clean. Ask to see their permits if they are not displayed on the walls and be sure they are current. The equipment used by the studio should be individually packaged, dated, sealed and sterilized. The tattoo artist should disinfect the work area on your skin with an EPA approved virucidal that will kill any surface bacteria or viruses.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Universal Precautions should be followed by the studio. These are regulations that outline procedures to be followed when dealing with bodily fluids.

When you hear the term "Satanist," what images spring to mind? Orgiastic midnight rituals of devil worship and animal sacrifice? Scary, dark priests and priestesses casting strange curses upon their enemies?
While there are many sects of Satanism, as there are in Christianity, the organization responsible for founding modern Satanism is called The Church of Satan (CoS). Most CoS members would claim that animal sacrifice and devil worship have no place in their spiritual beliefs.
Founded in 1966 in San Francisco by Anton Szander LaVey, CoS now has thousands of members, though the exact number is hard to pin down, as many members do not wish to be publicly identified.
In general, the primary tenets of Satanism consist of personal responsibility, focus on the pleasures of the here and now, and achievement in society.
CoS members do not worship Satan as a deity similar to the Christian God, but rather see "him" as a dark pagan god in the pre-Christian sense. The pagan Satan represents earthly sensuality and virile power.

And, they have also been represented by the beautiful art of tattooing. The Japanese art of tattooing has many names, two of the most common being – irezumi and horimono. Irezumi is the traditional word for a tattoo that is visible on the body and covers a large surface area, like the back. Yes, tattoo art has a long and rich history in Japan.
Due to the early influences of Buddhism and Confucianism on the Japanese people and their culture, the art of tattooing has always had a somewhat negative connotation for most of the people. The Japanese tattoo is considered to be the mark of the yakuza, who is a member of the Japanese mafia.

How do I pick a Tattoo Artist

Start by asking people you know who have tattoos that you like. Look on TattooBin for your Tattoo Artist and Tattoo Studio. Visit several studios to see the artists work and ask to see photographs of the artists work to see if you like their style. Check out TattooBin.com and the different tattoo publications. When looking for a Tattoo artist there are a few things to consider, first; when looking at their photographs, check to see if the lines are clean and smooth or broken and jagged and be sure they meet up. Take the time to shop around because that will make a big difference in your end result. A good tattoo artist will take time to sit with you and they will create a special work of art just for you. Ask the tattoo artist if he or she is a member of a national tattoo organization. The Alliance of Professional Tattooing is a nonprofit organization that monitors legislations and keeps the artists updated on safety issues.

Are Tattoo’s safe

Yes, if administered properly. The first step is to look for a tattoo artist who is licensed. It is best to have your hepatitis and tetanus immunizations up to date when getting a tattoo. Some cities and states have standards for tattoo studios. Call your state, county or local health department to find out about the laws in your community.

What is a tattoo

Did you know that about twelve million Americans have one tattoo! A tattoo is a design made on the skin by a process of pricking and ingraining an indelible pigment. The design is made on the skin with a temporary dye such as henna or ink. “The word tattoo comes from the Tahitian "tatu" which means "to mark something.” Tattoos date back to 3300 years B.C. and have been known to be found on Egyptian and Nubian mummies. Many societies wore tattoos as part of their culture but in todays society, tattoos are widely accepted and are used to convey a message or display artwork.

They are known to drive all the negative energy away, they are very clean, sensitive, independent and of course they can help you impress most women.

Recent surveys proved that men who love animals, especially cats and men who own a cat have more chances on getting a date. Maybe these women thought that if a man cares about his kitties then chances are that he will care for a woman and for children. Women see cats as children or babies while men see cats as friends. Women clearly stated they could be easily attracted to such a sensitive and caring man. That is a good reason why you should go out and get a cat. They are real female magnets!
Just don't forget that in order to get a cat you must be a pet lover and really know how to treat the animal right. If you don't like animals then you'd better not try this. For example a lot of people are allergic to cats. Others just can't train their cats. Don't just get a cat if you are unsure how to train her.

Application Tips

Application Tips

WATERSLIDE TATTOO APPLICATION & CAREAPPLICATION:

Proper application is important for your waterslide temporary tattoo to look good and last for a longer time. The tattoo bonds to the skin with a medical grade adhesive, much like an adhesive bandage. The skin should be clean, free of oil, and dry before the tattoo is applied. Follow these steps:

1) Wash and dry the area where the tattoo will be applied. Use rubbing alcohol if the area has been exposed to tanning lotion or other oils.

2) If there is more than one tattoo on the sheet, cut the selected image from the sheet. For larger images, we recommend you trim away excessive backing paper around the tattoo.

3) Peel off the protective plastic or paper from the tattoo, and carefully place it against the skin. Remember that the tattoo will adhere to the skin so you won’t be able to move it. Gently rub the backing paper to insure good contact with the skin.

4) Using a damp sponge or washcloth, hold it against the backing paper until it is completely saturated. This will dissolve the gel that holds the actual tattoo in place. Don’t rush this step. It may take two or more applications of water to completely dissolve the gel. After 10 or 15 seconds, test by gently rotating the backing paper. If it doesn’t slide easily, add more water and wait another minute or two. Gently slide or peel the backing paper away from the tattoo.

5) Allow the tattoo to set for about a minute. Then gently pat with damp sponge or cloth to remove any gel that may remain on the skin.

TIP: A light dusting with powder can give the tattoo a more realistic look.

CARE

With proper care, your waterslide tattoo should last an average of four days. Some people report they look good for a week or more. Rubbing by clothing or contamination with any type of oil will shorten the life of the temporary tattoo. When bathing, don’t scrub the tattoo and gently pat dry. Natural body oils will break the tattoo down over time.

REMOVAL

You can remove your temporary tattoo at any time by rubbing it with any kind of oil and allow it to stand a minute or two. Then wipe with a tissue or paper towel. Another method of removal is to press any type of adhesive tape, like Scotch tape, against the tattoo and peel it from the skin. Clean off any remaining residue with rubbing alcohol.

Tattoo Machine

Tattoo Machine

To trace the history of the tattoo machine, we have to go back to the early 1800s. Back to the time before Samuel O'Reilly patented the tattoo machine. Back to the time when Volta, an Italian inventor, developed the electric battery.

All early tattoo machines and their prototypes were battery operated. The basic electrical principle of electromagnetism, discovered in 1819 by the Danish inventor Oersted, has been used in all tattoo machine patents and in most practical applications of tattoo machines. In 1891, Samuel O'Reilly filed is famous tattoo machine patent. It is true to say that O'Reilly's was the first full-fledged tattoo machine patent, but before this there was considerable development in electromagnetically powered puncturing tools.

In 1876 Thomas Alva Edison of Newark, New Jersey, received a patent on a device designed for making painting and embroidery patterns. This patent was for a rotary type electromagnetic machine that was battery powered. The machine was designed so that the stencil pen would punch holes in paper which had been placed on the object to be painted. Colored powder would then be dusted over the pattern, and a simple outline would be transferred to the object.

This method of stencil transfer is still used today in the sign-painting industry. I don't think one needs to look too closely at the mechanical drawing of this machine to see that it could easily be adapted to tattooing. Samuel O'Reilly certainly did and saw the future in this too. Fifteen years later, with only minor modifications of Edison's design,O'Reilly received the first U.S. patent for a tattoo machine. The O'Reilly modifications included a redesigned tube assembly and an ink reservoir.

Thomas A. Edison (1847-1931) was one of America's most prolific inventors. During his lifetime he received more than 1,000 patents for such things as the stock ticker, telegraph systems, the phonograph, incandescent lamps, and the kinetoscope, which was the forerunner of the motion picture projector.

Edison was obviously not satisfied with his early stencil pen design, because in 1877 he developed a new idea and received another patent on this device. This machine was quite different from the original rotary machine. The 1877 patent was for a two electromagnetic coil device with the coils set transversely to the tube assembly. A flexible reed vibrated over these coils and created the reciprocating motion needed to make the stencil. Looking at this machine, it is obvious that it could readily be turned to tattoo applications. This device truly marks the beginning of the development of the machine that most tattoo artists use today.

In 1904, Charlie Wagner of New York City, received a patent for a tattoo machine. Many historians believe that O'Reilly was a major influence on the development of this machine. However, by looking at the original patent drawing, you can see that both Wagner and O'Reilly referred to the Edison design. It is easy to understand how early inventors were inspired by Edison, especially those like O'Reilly and Wagner, who lived in the same part of the country. Edison would travel from his New Jersey workshop to New York City to show his inventions to the public. His work was well known.

Wagner, O'Reilly, or whomever it was that made the modifications to the 1877 Edison patent, did a good job of altering it for tattooing applications. Some of the alterations included improved tube assembly with ink chamber, an on and off switch, stroke adjustment, and a pin vice type needle bar.

In 1929 Percy Waters of Detroit received a patent on the design that most people think of when they think of a tattooing machine.

Waters was not the first inventor to work with this design. Unfortunately the true originator's name is lost in the obscure annals of tattoo history. Waters' machine was the standard two coil electromagnetic style, but the coils were set in line with the frame. Other modifications included fingertip on and off switch, spark shield, and a needle set up for cutting plastic stencils. During the many years of his supply business, Waters manufactured and sold many different machine types and styles. Waters seems to have been the only early tattoo machine inventor that was able to turn his patent into a marketable item.

It was fifty years before the next tattoo machine patent was registered. This patent was issued in 1979 to Carol Nightingale of Washington D.C.

As you can see, Nightingale built quite an elaborate device. A few of his many alterations included full adjustability of coils, back spring mount and contact screw, leaf springs of different lengths for different types of work, and an angled armature bar that did away with the bend in the front spring.

You can see that the machine has gone through many changes in the hundred years since Edison started his tinkering with the stencil pen. No matter how many modifications occur, a perfect machine for every artist will never be built; all tattoo artists will alter the standard machine to fit their individual needs and applications. Tattoo machines are a very personalized tool. No two are the same.

In the U.S. and Europe many inventors still work on tattoo machine designs. Most of these inventors will not file to receive patents on their designs often because of the time and money involved, or perhaps due to the lack of an original design. In theory, each time an improvement is made to the design, the tattoo machine evolves into a better tool. Sometimes the changes are not improvements at all, and the applications of these modifications are short lived. As with any new development, there is a process of trial and error. Often, what looks like an improvement to one person is a hindrance to another. And the search goes on.

For more detailed coverage on government patents, read the booklet entitled "Tattoo Machine Patents and Related Ones" published by the Tattoo Archive located in Berkeley, California.

To create a wrapped loop you should use 20 guage wire or a head pin. You would use a head pin if you only need one side of your bead(s) to have a loop. You would use the wire if you need to create loops on both ends of the bead. As you can see, a head pin is perfect for creating dangles for earrings and for dangles to hang off your necklace. A loop on each end of a bead allows that bead to be hooked on both ends for creative design purposes.

Tattoo Magazine booksWhat makes a good tattoo magazine? According to critics and readers, that’s partly a function of the various aspects of the subculture you affiliate yourself with, but what it really comes down to is the quality of images and information. A tattoo magazine should be able to give you both. Top Tattoo MagazinesHere are some of the top-rated tattoo magazines. Skin and Ink and Tattoo Flash are general interest, with some tattooing articles geared for people who already have few tattoos – they’re not geared for novices, particularly. For the most part these magazines (as well as Tattoo Revue) are about the tattoo art. You might be able to pick up a wealth of free tattoo designs from these magazines, which are glossy and feature high quality images.Tattoo Savage and International Tattoo Art both have a more global scope – the latter in particular. The tattoo articles and photos in these magazines show tribal and ethnic tattoos; again, this is a fabulous place to get ideas and information, not to mention free images. Some people read tattoo magazines for a while before getting their first tattoo. For others, it’s something they pick up later. After you get a tattoo, you might find that your are so excited about it, you can’t help reading and looking at whatever you can find. Women’s OnlyThere is at least one prominent tattoo magazine that is geared primarily toward women – it’s called, appropriately enough, Tattoos for Women, and though it has fewer glossy images, it offers solid advice. Men's OnlyLuckily men are not left out in the cold, there's a tattoo magazine geared towards men as well and guess how it is called... You're right, Tattoo for Men, filled to the brim with testosterone.Finding a tattoo magazine on your newsstand or magazine ship may or may not be a challenge. All too often newsstands tend to carry only mainstream publications, but then again what is considered ‘mainstream’ may vary according to the community you’re in! So by all means, check for tattoo magazines wherever you regularly buy magazines, but don’t be discouraged it you don’t find them there. Most major cities have magazine stores that carry a much greater variety, the whole shop being devoted to magazines – you are more likely to find a tattoo magazine (or several different ones) in store like that. Also, keep in mind that most magazines have online subscriptions now, so that’s an option you can check out if you can’t find the tattoo magazine you’re looking for at a store or newsstand.
